Tri-Cities families receiving food stamps increases since recession

The number of families receiving Food Stamp/SNAP benefits in the Tri-Cities increased when compared to a 2008 pre-recession benchmark.

The comparison is based in the 2013 American Community Survey for 2013 and the 2008 ACS.

The increase in Johnson city was 106.5% – 4,781 compared to 2,315 in 2008.

Kingsport saw a 51.4% increase – 4,734 compared to 3,127 in 2008.

In Bristol the number increased by 32.4% – 1,943 compared to 1,467 in 2008.
