Tenn. August jobless rate increases to 7.4%


Tennessee’s unemployment rate for August was 7.4%, up 0.3% from July’s revised rate.

According to the summary from the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the state jobless rate has decreased from 8.4% to 7.4% over the year while the national rate declined from 7.2% to 6.1%.

Nonfarm employment was up by 6,700 jobs from July.

The largest increased came in the accommodations/food services, administrative support/waste services and durable goods manufacturing.

So far this year nonfarm employment is up 59,000 in Tennessee. the biggest increases came in the professional/business services, leisure/hospitality and trade/transportation/utilities sectors.

The U.S. preliminary jobless rate for August is 6.2%, down from 6.2% in July.

Local employment and jobs data is scheduled for release late next week.
