Tenn. jobless rate increases to 7.1% in July

Tennessee’s unemployment rate increased 0.5% to 7.1% in July.

According to the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development the state jobless rate has decreased from 8.4% to 7.1% while the national race has declined from 7.3% to 6.2%.

Total nonfarm employment was up by 3,300 jobs from June with the largest increases in mining, logging and construction; financial activities and retail trade.

So far this year employment has increased by 51,900 jobs. The largest increases came in professional and business services; leisure and hostility; and trade, transportation and utilities.

County and city labor market data will be released late next week.
