May NE Tenn. sales tax collections up in all areas except Johnson City

Three of four NE Tennessee MSAs showed year-over-year sales tax collections growth in May. The exception was the three-county Johnson City area.

According to seasonally adjusted collections numbers from MTSU’s Business and Economic Research Center,  the three-county Johnson City area’s collections were down 0.5% when compared to May last year. It was the only MSA in the state showing a May year-over-year collections decrease.

The four-county Kingsport-Bristol MSA had 0.35 growth.

Morristown leads the region for growth with an improvement of 3.8%.

Knoxville’s MSA recorded a 1.9% growth.

The short-term month-over-month report shows Kingsport-Bristol collection were 11.4% higher than April while Johnson City collections dropped by 2.6%.

Morristown had a 7.1% improvement from April and Knoxville was up 0.5%.
