Johnson City area employers cut 100 nonfarm jobs in December. At the same time, there were 769 fewer people in the three-county MSA employed than there were in November. And, the unemployment rate was unchanged from November at 6.8%.

Let’s look at jobs first.

The rounded nonfarm jobs total was 80,100 in the current Bureau of Labor Statistics report that based on a survey of employers. That’s 100 fewer jobs than the November total. When compared to December last year it shows a gain of 100 jobs. And, when compared to a pre-recession benchmark of December 2008 the nonfarm job total is down by 1,300 jobs.

The employment and unemployment rate numbers come from the Census Bureau/Bureau of Labor Statistic survey and focuses on the number of people looking for work and those with jobs – not where the jobs are located.  That report shows 89,550 Johnson City MSA residents employed in December.  The November total was 90,319. That’s still a preliminary number and will likely be revised next month.

Overall, December and the fourth quarter job creation was better than the rest of the year. The nonfarm annual total has the MSA about even with 2012, but down 2,500 jobs from the 2008 annual total.

The trend of a declining labor force continues to be an issue. That trend is driven by the last year and a half’s declining number of jobs and the number of workers who have dropped out of the labor force. They’re still here, but the not counted in the employment/unemployment census.

Here’s the employment ranking for the local labor market based on preliminary nonadjusted rounded totals.
