Kingsport-Bristol, Johnson City MSA August sales tax collections make solid gains

Kingsport-Bristol retail sales tax collections were up for the second straight month in August. The same improvement patters can be seen in the Johnson-City MSA, Morristown and Knoxville MSAs.

MTSU’s Bureau of Economic Research Center’s current report on collections in the four-county MSA region shows a 5.7% increase from August last year and a 3.5% increase from July.

Johnson City’s August collections were up 3.1% from last year and 2% better than last month.

The gains put the region on positive footing for the first two months of the third quarter following a slightly improved second quarter and a dismal first quarter.

The August-to-August performance was up in all East Tennessee MSAs.

Morristown has the strongest increase at 7.3% followed by Kingsport-Bristol then Johnson City. Knoxville’s collections were up 2%.
